Martin Christie
Any exercise technique is only as good as the instructor teaching it. Your instructor, Martin Christie, is a health and fitness coach with over 15 years' teaching experience. He was the first certified Method Putkisto instructor in the UK and holds a degree in Sport & Exercise Sciences. He has managed large health clubs and personal training teams, and has been a health adviser for BUPA.
Martin individually tailors your Method Putkisto programme to your specific needs. He works with a wide variety of individuals.
ATHLETES
Would enhancing your neuromuscular awareness and control, and strengthening your breathing, help you improve at your sport?
- The focus within Method Putkisto on neuromuscular education can be rapidly applied to any activity, enhancing your control of any movement.
- With the deep stretching comes a greater range of motion with increased joint stability, allowing a greater range of power application through a movement, while minimising wear and tear of the joints. Recent evidence also indicates production of new sarcomeres (the power units within the muscles) in an elongated muscle, thereby creating strength gains.
- The deep breathing exercises improve mobility of the ribcage, allowing greater movement of the diaphragm and increasing the expulsion of 'dead air' from the lungs and a resultant increase of oxygen on inhalation. The greater mobility of the ribcage allows you to breathe more deeply without breathing 'into' your stomach, and therefore allows you to maintain control of the transverse abdominals (deepest and most supportive of the abdominal muscles) through the whole breathing cycle.
- This is absolutely essential for any "core" conditioning.
PAIN SUFFERERS
Years of poor postural positions, such as sitting at a desk or in a car all day, put an incredible strain on our bodies. Muscles become shortened, pulling our bones into positions that cause us pain. Neck, jaw and face muscles can shorten, leading to headaches, biting disorders and teeth grinding problems at night. Circulation deteriorates leaving us tired and lacking in energy, adding to the stress of constant or niggling pain.
Method Putkisto focuses on elongating the short tight muscles and opening up your body, allowing your bones to sit in a more comfortable position, improving your circulation and releasing tension through your entire body. Pain often occurs where muscles are overworking to compensate for tightness and weakness elsewhere in the body. In your programme you will work around the site of the pain and elsewhere in your body that may be influencing this need for muscular compensation. In this way, Method Putkisto takes a whole body approach to pain management.
The greatest benefit of Method Putkisto in relieving pain is that you are creating the changes yourself, rather than someone doing it for you, and the results can therefore become permanent and self-maintained.
INDIVIDUALS WANTING RAPID BODY SHAPE CHANGE
Targeting and stretching specific deep muscles has a dramatic effect on your body shape. Some of the main muscles targeted include:
- Diaphragm: to lift your ribcage, lengthen your waistline, and improve your energy and relaxation levels.
- Deep thigh muscles, deep buttock muscles, inner thigh muscles and hamstrings: to realign the tilt of your pelvis, open your lower back, lift your buttocks, increase circulation and reduce cellulite.
- Lower back muscles: to lengthen your waist.
- Pectorals (chest): to open your chest and shoulder line, lift breasts, expand your breathing capacity, increase the circulation to your head, and reduce tiredness and tension.
- Neck and facial muscles: to lift your face and neck, release tension and increase circulation.
