Method Putkisto in sports

The Method highlights the fact that muscle tightness and shortness are the primary problems in all sports causing injuries and preventing improved competitive results. While we load the muscle groups that a particular sport requires we have the other muscle groups hardly in use. When you do not use the muscle it gets shorter and closer to the bone preventing the movement rather than supporting it. This muscle imbalance is the main cause of not only injuries, ache and pains -but it is also preventing the use of the body's maximum strength.

Method Putkisto teaches you the very basic skills of any sport: stretching and strengthening the core muscles and a good breathing technique. Balanced and elongated muscles will give us a new freedom in our movement that makes it possible to use less energy in the warm up and the right breathing technique enables us to effectively use oxygen thus giving us greater power in our performance. Like 100m sprinter, Tyrone Lewis puts it: 'This is a great advantage as I am now able to conserve a lot more energy for the actual race or training session.' And like Ikky Maas, co-director of Millennium Dance 2000 found that Method Putkisto has allowed some of his students to'...free themselves of muscular tightness and express fully their dance and performance potential.'

During those unfortunate times of injuries it becomes more important to maintain our physical strength as well as maintaining elongated and balanced muscles. During the time of complete rest we lose some of our muscle strength already in a week and it will take months to build up the same strength again. Method Putkisto concentrates on isolating each and individual muscle and then applies either weight to stretch the muscle or muscular contraction to strengthen that specific muscle thus leaving the injured and/or operated area to gain the benefit of increased circulation and improved innervations. Like Physiotherapist of Finnish Olympic team and board member of IADMS (International Association of Dance, Medicine and Science) Jarmo Ahonen agrees: 'Sports or dance injuries may jeopardize the season but the injured person is still not ill with a disease and should continue training as soon as possible with experienced supervision. The injured area must be protected but the rest of the body may be trained quite intensively. Method Putkisto is very suitable for such work because of its preciseness'
